More than 80 years after the creation of the wohnbedarf philosophy, the two companies are now merging. Two companies, one name: in 1931, the first wohnbedarf store offering modern furniture was launched in Zurich. One year later, a second store opened in Basel. Both had almost identical concepts, but were managed entirely autonomously. The idea to merge the two companies already existed back then. The founder of wohnbedarf in Basel, linoleum and carpet trader Paul Matzinger, offered his Zurich colleagues the opportunity to take over the store in Basel as a branch. For reasons that are unknown, this never happened, and the two wohnbedarf stores continued to operate independently and successfully with the same logo by Max Bill.

A partnership has long existed in certain fields, but the two companies always remained independent, with each living by the wohnbedarf philosophy for itself. Now, the two companies are finally united under one roof.
